Alan Hydes – artist, published author and University lecturer
We are delighted to introduce Alan Hydes as our instructor for the art program in Deia, Mallorca, Spain.
Over the past 35 years, Alan Hydes has been a visiting lecturer at several Universities and Art Colleges and consequently has a wealth of experience in coaxing the best talent from students.
Alan usually begins the courses with a brief introduction of the main objectives - developing individual visual perception followed by, exploring various methods such as drawing and/or painting, in which to express that perception.
Alan treats drawing as a means to developing a visual language enabling the students to construct visual statements. As such, drawing becomes the initial focus as students learn to draw figuratively to transform imagery into form.
Depending on the abilities of students at that stage, each student will progress to work in other materials, - watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels etc.
In a recent article by Chris Bond, Yorkshire Post, he states:
“High-profile sitters have included Sir Edward Heath, Dame Thora Hird, Lord Harewood, Jilly Cooper, Ricky Tomlinson and Sir Bernard Ingham, while countless other actors, rock stars, Archbishops and top company directors have formed the mainstay of his work in portraiture.....the Yorkshire artist has also forged an impressive reputation in botanical painting and drawing and until recently his inspired imagery was drawn from the dramatic Yorkshire scenery and botany. He used oils, acrylics and watercolors to translate his visual perception into works that earned him the tag of “colorist”.
Six years ago Hydes took the dramatic step of setting up a second painting studio in Mallorca, Spain. ‘The quality of the Mediterranean light is marvelous,’ say Hydes. ‘I use primary colors with great intensity in a way I never imagined I would ever dare to paint.’ Hydes readily acknowledges his debt to David Hockney, as it was Hockney who first inspired Hydes to work with such intense color. ‘David spent years working in the California sunshine, and it simply came through in his work there’.
Over the past ten years Hydes has produced three television documentaries on Hockney, HOCKNEY PAINTS THE STAGE, HYDES ON HOCKNEY and YORKSHIRE LANDSCAPES. He interviewed Hockney on location at Salts Mill in Saltaire, West Yorkshire.
Hydes work can be found in public and private collections around the world. Bradford City Art Gallery recently commissioned a large canvas as part of the Centenary Exhibition while The University of Bradford commissioned two large portraits for their private collection only last year.” Credit: Chris Bond YORKSHIRE POST
